Sub-Zero, Thermador or Viking for an opening you already have
Showroom comparisons start with features. In a finished kitchen the opening comes first: what stands in it now, what the cabinetry around it will allow, and how the new unit will be serviced in ten years. This guide starts there.
Why openings matter in Greenwood Village
On 8 September 1950, voters at Curtis School chose 74 to 64 to incorporate Greenwood Village, and the Colorado Supreme Court upheld the result on 13 November 1951. The city’s own history gives the reason: residents wanted to set up zoning restrictions and keep disruptive development out.
No record counts the custom kitchens that followed, so take this as reasoning rather than a statistic: in a custom kitchen a built-in sits in an opening cut for one particular unit. Swapping makers means fitting that opening.
Integrated columns: all three make them
| Maker | Line | Widths listed | Faces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sub-Zero | Designer columns and over-and-under units | 18, 24, 30 and 36 in. | every model panel-ready; stainless panels sold as an accessory |
| Thermador | Freedom Collection refrigerator columns | 24, 30 and 36 in. | stainless or panel-ready |
| Viking | integrated, panel-ready columns, plus a 36 in. integrated bottom-freezer | refrigerator 24, 30 and 36 in.; freezer 18, 24, 30 and 36 in. | panel-ready |
Width is only the first match. Each maker publishes a rough opening for every model, and the toe-kick height, the grille position and the way the panel hangs can differ between them.
Wide built-ins with a visible grille
Sub-Zero’s Classic line covers 30, 36, 42 and 48 in. in over-and-under, side-by-side and French-door layouts, with the grille at the top, flipping up. Viking lists a 5 Series built-in side-by-side, 42 and 48 in., stainless or panel-ready. We have not compared Thermador’s wider built-ins here; check its current models directly.
Keeping fresh food and freezer apart
Sub-Zero builds two compressors and two evaporators in every combination refrigerator-freezer, which it calls dual refrigeration. Thermador pairs a refrigerator column with a separate freezer column; Viking does the same, or offers a bottom-freezer. A pair of columns reaches the same separation by a different route: two appliances instead of two systems in one cabinet. Our dual refrigeration guide explains why it matters.
Service access
On a Sub-Zero Classic the condenser and compressor sit behind the top grille, which flips up. On a Designer unit they are at the bottom. For Thermador and Viking, find the machine compartment in the installation guide before the cabinetmaker builds around it; whatever the brand, the grille has to stay reachable and unobstructed.
Sealed-system warranty
Sub-Zero’s residential warranty runs two years, all parts and labor; five years, sealed-system parts and labor; and twelve years, sealed-system parts; the owner pays labor and other costs. Thermador and Viking publish their own warranty terms; read the statements for the exact models you are weighing.
We repair Sub-Zero. If Sub-Zero is the choice, the Classic or Designer guide is the next step.
Comparison questions
Will a Thermador or Viking column fit where a Sub-Zero column was?
Sometimes, but never assume it. The nominal widths overlap at 24, 30 and 36 inches, yet the rough opening each maker asks for, its toe-kick and grille arrangement, the panel mounting and the hinge clearance can all differ. Lay the new unit’s installation guide beside your own measurements before ordering.
Is Sub-Zero’s dual refrigeration the same as a pair of columns?
Close in effect: either way the fresh-food side and the freezer do not share air. In a Sub-Zero combination unit the two systems live in one cabinet; with a pair of columns from any of the three makers they are two separate appliances standing side by side, each with a cooling system of its own.
