What goes wrong, and where we look

  • One side warm, the other fine. On a dual-refrigeration model each side has its own compressor and evaporator, so we test the side that is failing on its own terms.
  • Frost on the back wall or water under the drawers. Usually the defrost path: heater, sensor, drain.
  • Noise, or none. A fan that has seized or started to rattle, a compressor that will not start.
  • Display and controls. Warnings that keep coming back, a dark panel, settings that will not hold.
  • Ice and water. No ice, slow fills, drips at the valve.
  • Doors. Gaskets, hinges and the cams that pull a door shut.

How the visit runs

Call or book online and tell us the model if you can see it. We diagnose the whole unit, both cooling systems where there are two, then give you a single price. Nothing is repaired until you agree to it. If the machinery is reached from the front, as it usually is on a built-in, the cabinetry stays where it is.

What it costs

The visit is $89, deducted from the repair when you go ahead. Typical ranges: defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $290–$640; fan motor $330–$680; control board $400–$880; compressor or sealed-system work $1,500–$3,020. Ranges, not quotes: the figure you approve comes after the diagnosis.

Choosing instead of repairing?

If the conversation turns to a new unit, our guides compare Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking for the opening you have, and Sub-Zero’s Classic and Designer lines.

Repair questions

What is worth checking before I call?

Read any message on the display, and note both temperatures if the unit shows them. Listen at the grille: a compressor humming with no fan, or no sound at all, narrows things down. Check the breaker, and on a Designer model make sure nothing is pressed against the bottom grille.

Can you help in years six to twelve of the sealed-system warranty?

Yes. In those years Sub-Zero still covers certain sealed-system parts (compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting tubing), while the owner pays the labor. Its terms say an owner using independent service contacts Sub-Zero to receive the parts, so we diagnose, you request the part, and we fit it.
